Market Conditions September 5, 2010
Asparagus is lower again this week but larger sizes are still on the tight side. There is a good supply of green peppers but strong demand will hold prices fairly steady. Broccoli and cauliflower are both higher on less product but demand will determine what the prices do. Celery is steady to on the rise on lighter supplies but quality is good. Increased western cucumber production will help prices there but eastern supplies and prices will be steady. Romaine is coming down as supplies are growing. Romaine hearts are in better shape. Leaf lettuce production is off some due to high heats. Iceberg has some quality issues but price is down some on lower demand. Onion supplies are better and prices are steady to down some. New potatoes are coming on line and demand is strong so prices are a bit higher. Squash supplies are growing (both East & West) and are expected to grow even more so prices will drop some next week. Growing production and slower than normal demand will help globe tomato prices come down. Cherry, grape and plum tomatoes are still a little on the tight side. Avocado prices are high(er) as supplies drop and
demand continues to be strong. Strawberry quality is improving and so are supplies but not enough to help prices too much. Raspberry quality is better but prices are still high. Black & Blueberries are higher again this week as heat is slowing harvesting and affecting quality. Lemons are holding steady but oranges are going up some as smaller sizes are tight and larger sizes are being substituted. Good quality grapes are steady with new varieties. Honeydew is steady but cantaloupes may go up some depending on your suppliers’ inventory as supplies drop.
